Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly referred to as Tottenham or Spurs, are a professional football club in North London, England. The club's emblem is a cockerel standing on a football, with the Latin motto Audere est Facere (‘To Dare Is to Do’).

Tottenham Hotspur were formed in 1882, and were originally named 'Hotspur Football Club' before changing to 'Tottenham Hotspur Football Club' in 1884 because postmen were confusing the club for another team of the same name elsewhere in London.

Spurs made history in 1901 by becoming the first non-league team to win the FA Cup, a record that still holds today and looks unlikely to ever be broken.

Tottenham were the first club to achieve the League and FA Cup double, winning both competitions in the 1960–61 campaign. Then in 1963, they became the first British side to win a UEFA club competition – the European Cup Winners' Cup. In 1972, they were also the winners of the first ever UEFA Cup in 1972, becoming the first British club to win two different major European trophies.

In fact, Tottenham won at least one major trophy in each of the six decades from the 1950’s to 2000’s, an achievement only matched by English football giants, Manchester United. In all, Spurs have won 2 league titles, 8 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, and 7 FA Community Shield, plus 1 European Cup Winners' Cup and 2 UEFA Cups.

Based on trophies won, Spurs are the 6th most successful club in England.

However, since the inception of the Premier League, Spurs have famously struggled to follow up their earlier success, with only 2 League Cups to their name during this time.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium officially opened in 2019 after the demolition of the old White Hart Lane to make way for the new stadium. With a stadium capacity of 62,850, Spurs can now boast the second biggest stadium in the league and one of the most impressive in the world.

Tottenham have some strong rivalries with several London clubs, none more fierce than with North London neighbours, Arsenal. The North London Derby is one of the biggest fixtures on the football calender. Other notable rivalries include fellow London clubs Chelsea and West Ham United.

Located just a short walk from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is White Hart Lane Station, and the nearest London Underground station is Seven Sisters, on the Victoria Line, which does require a good 30 minute walk to the ground.
