Sheffield United Football Club are a professional football club from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The club were founding members of the Premier League back in 1992 and famously scored the first ever goal of the new competition.

Sheffield United have played their home games at Bramall Lane since their formation in 1889. Their ground is currently an all-seater stadium located near the centre of Sheffield, with a capacity of 32,702. Bramall Lane is the oldest major league ground in the world, having hosted its first game in 1862!

Also known as the Blades, due to Sheffield’s history of producing steel cutlery, the club was formed by members of the Sheffield United Cricket Club, who after losing their previous tenants of Bramall Lane, needed to create a new team to generate income.

United's glory years are unquestionably the 30 year period from 1895–1925, during which time they were champions of England in 1897–98 and runners-up in 1896–97 and 1899–1900. They also won the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925.

However, Sheffield United have not won a trophy since 1925 but after a couple of years in the Championship, the Blades are back in the Premier League in 2023–24.

Fun Fact: The first game to be featured in a live radio broadcast was Sheffield United vs Arsenal on January 22, 1927. The BBC provided live commentary of the match, while the Radio Times included a map of the pitch with numbers so listeners could work out where the ball was. The goalkeeper’s area was called square one and this was the first use of the phrase ‘Back to Square One’.

Sheffield United have several rivalries, which are mostly with other Yorkshire sides. Most significant is the local rivalry with city neighbours Sheffield Wednesday, known as the Steel City derby and a big fixture on the football calendar.

Other club rivalries include fellow Yorkshire club Leeds United, plus Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United. Fans might also include West Ham as a rival, due to a bitter relationship resulting from the 'Tevez saga' and the following lawsuit charges.

Sheffield Railway Station is conveniently located only one mile away from Bramall Lane and be reached in just a short 15 minute walk.
